A lot of long lenses have a mount on the barrel to attache the tripod to. I have the Sigma 50-500 on a Fuji S3 and S2 and I have to remove the camera from the tripod and mount the lens on the tripod. This makes it much more stable

Clair,
I have the Nikon 500mm and after many attempts to suport it with various tripod heads can say that the only one that really works is the Wimberly.
It makes the lens balance properly and you can control it with a light single finger touch.
